In order to help bring awareness to the Florida Gulf Coast Hope Spot, we are asking municipalities up and down the coast to promote sustainable activities that will keep our waters healthy.
We are encouraging municipalities to support these activities by recognizing their effort with a designation of Florida Gulf Coast Hope Spot "Beacon City." The city of Dunedin, Florida was our first Beacon City and many more are following suit.
|City has passed a resolution of support for the Florida Gulf Coast Hope Spot that includes recognition that the Hope Spot goal is to focus on activities[i] promoting and supporting education, research, information sharing and sustainable use of our coastal waters.
|City has a Sustainability Lead.|
|City has designated a liaison. to work with Blue-Green Connections on Hope Spot related activities.
|At least one Hope Spot education event has been held in the city (the city need not have put on the event).|
|City has put on, sponsored, or promoted at least one qualifying sustainability event [ii].|
|City has demonstrated action toward sustainable practices [iii].
[i] Activities may include educational events through outreach and school events, information sharing events amongst research organizations and other stakeholders, data gathering and sharing to support research activities, restoration and clean-up activities of our natural coastal areas, promotion of sustainable commercial and recreational fishing, clean water and clean energy initiatives within the City, and engagement with stakeholders to identify other types of activities or initiatives that support the Hope Spot goal.
[ii] Qualifying sustainability events are at the discretion of the Blue-Green Connections, Inc Board of Directors, but include such things as presentations on solar power or reduction of plastics
[iii] This is at the discretion of the Blue-Green Connections, Inc Board of Directors, but includes such things as Sierra Club sponsored Ready for 100 and moving toward ocean friendly practices within their organization and/or the city
Has your business already worked to get a certification that shows you've implemented sustainable practices? Are you Ocean Friendly or LEED certified? If so, you may already qualify for Beacon Business status!
